Meghalaya Introduces Bamboo Biochar Soil Amendment Pilots

The Meghalaya Agriculture Department has initiated a pilot in East Khasi hills to produce bamboo biochar as a soil amendment for tea and vegetable crops. Locally sourced bamboo stalks are kiln-processed into biochar, which is then mixed into soil to improve nutrient retention and microbial activity. Early results show water-use efficiency improved by 18%, and yield increases of 15% in trial plots. Farmers can produce and apply biochar using existing village kilns. This circular soil enhancement model is expected to expand across tribal belt agriculture zones under climate-smart practice schemes.
